There are so many incredible reasons to visit Iceland, and so many things to do in Iceland, that I am getting really excited and have already started planning my trip that is coming up in April. I will be staying at the Eric The Red Guesthouse which looks incredibly charming. I am looking forward to the breakfasts there, and can’t wait to try all of the food in Iceland. Here are some of the awe-inspiring things to do in Iceland that I plan to do when I visit.

7 Awe-Inspiring Things To Do In Iceland

1. Golden Circle Tour

The Golden Circle tour is definitely one of the Iceland tours I plan to take. The tour will include some of the highlights of Iceland including Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall, and the Geysir hot spring. What’s great is the Golden Circle can be done as a day trip from Reykjavik. While on the tour, make sure to stop and see the Icelandic horses. They are amazing to watch, and some places even have tours where you can ride them.

2. See The Jokulsarlon Lagoon

For an experience that’s other-worldly, you must head to the Jokulsarlon Lagoon. You can take boat tours and ride among the icebergs, and sometimes even see seals. The color palette is astonishing. You can also take an ice cave tour.

3. Visit The Black Sand Beach In Vik

Another great day trip from Reykjavik is the Black Sand Beach in Vik. There are incredible ocean views, and Islands Magazine considers this to be one of the top ten most beautiful beaches on Earth. Around the beach are caves to explore, and you can sometimes spot puffins in the cliffs overhead.

4. Swim In The Blue Lagoon

One of the most popular things to do in Iceland is to swim in the Blue Lagoon. It is a geothermal located in a lava field. It’s close to the Reykjavik Airport, so a convenient way to go would be to stop on the way to or from the airport. The blue color of the water comes from the silica the water contains and the way the water reflects the sunlight.

5. Go Chasing Waterfalls

Iceland has a huge amount of waterfalls, and seeing them is something you should definitely add to your itinerary. The Skógafoss waterfall is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 82 feet and a drop of 200 ft. You can usually see rainbows in front of the waterfall because of the amount of spray it produces. This is even great thing to do in Iceland in winter, as everything is coated in a thick layer of ice which causes some beautiful formations on the rocks.  Other awe-inspiring waterfalls are Seljalandsfoss, Dettifoss, and Dynjandi (Fjallfoss).

6. Tour The Crystal Caves

The ice caves inside Iceland’s glaciers are mesmerizing, and are one of the best things to do in Iceland in Winter when they are open. It is not recommended to go into the glaciers without a certified glacier guide, so this is something you should book an Iceland tour for. You must bring hiking books and warm clothes if you plan on touring the ice caves.

7. Northern Lights Night Tour

You need to be far away from any city lights to see the Northern Lights, but Reykjavik offers night tours which will get you out of the city and in a place dark enough to see them. The best season to see the northern lights in Iceland is from September to mid-April. Click here for a helpful article on how to see the Northern Lights in Iceland.
